It’s September. The new shoes have been purchased, the new school bag has been filled, and the kids are ready to start the new school year. As parents, we often feel a mixture of sadness and relief at the end of summer – it’s time to get them out and learning and for you to have some peace and quiet.
No more “muuuuuum?” or “daaaaad” every 5 minutes. No more planning and entertaining and spending endless money on ice creams and chips.

Here at Kosin, we’re parents too. We completely understand the juggle of family life vs me time. But it’s so important! Me time, us time, clearing your head, having fun – whatever you call it, now the kids are back in school, it’s time to start making time for it. But what could you do?
Do what makes you happy
We know what makes us happy and what gets those endorphins going. If you’re near to the coast, get down there and have a quiet surf now the beaches are empty. Enjoy the space! Breathe in that clean sea air and enjoy that early autumn heat and the warm post summer warm waters. Take in the views and enjoy chilling on the beach with your own thoughts.
If you are not near the coast, make the most of some time to get out and enjoy those beauty spots that have been busy with families and picnickers all summer. Take a hike in the woods or the hills, go to those watersport spots by rivers or lakes and try some paddleboarding or kayaking.
You might have more time to get out running or cycling more. Do it, just make the most of having some time back and being in nature.
You don’t need to be a parent to enjoy the quieter beaches, parks and beauty spots. The roads are often quieter out of rush hour times too, so you can get back to nature with more headspace and peace. Find moments to just have quiet and look around at the views and take it all in.
The main benefits of staying out in nature
- Your vitamin D levels rise. There is still sunlight strong enough to create vitamin D when it is on your skin. Vitamin D helps fight certain conditions, from osteoporosis and cancer to depression and heart attacks. When the sun gets cooler in late months it’s a good idea to supplement with vitamin D tablets.
- You’ll get more exercise. Keep your body moving and those endorphins raging. Physical activity has been proven to help people relax and cheer up, so if being outside and moving makes you happy, do as much as you can.
- You’ll be happier. Natural light is known for elevating people’s moods, and there’s usually more light available outside than in.
- Stress levels are reduced. Feelings of stress are relieved within minutes of exposure to nature. This has been proven by measuring muscle tension, blood pressure, and brain activity. Time spent in nature significantly reduces your cortisol, which is a stress hormone.
