A Night At The Movies

A Night at the Movies

24th February 2024

A night at the movies and wasn’t it one to remember. On the 9th February we had the pleasure of attending and sponsoring a local film event run by Gone Coastal Events. Gone Coastal are a great group of outdoor enthusiasts who, like us, want to encourage everyone to adventure outdoors as well as making sure to support local talent.

Which, speaking of, alongside the amazing lineup of Groundswell: the Other Side of Fear a daring feature that showcases the world of big wave surfing and those who dedicate themselves to the sport and Seb: A Surf Story made by the wonderful filmmakers of Duna Productions and supported by The Wave: Bristol was one of our own, Maddy Dodd, an up and coming documentary filmmaker originally from Plymouth and based in the South-West.

Her film, Waterways is a short documentary that Kosin, alongside Oceanfrog we have been supporting for the past few months through its production and now to its premiere screening (which I’m sure is the first of many). Waterways is a micro-short documentary that showcases the mental health journey of a local professional longboard surfer, Ashley Braunton. It shows not only his passion for surfing as a lifestyle but also as a means of recovery and a way to get yourself out there with a message of, at its heart, if you love it just do it and that nature and activity is often one of the greatest forms of recovery.

His story is one that hits close to home and its impact became ever stronger with the Q and A that both Ashley and Maddy partook in prior to the main event, the screening of Groundswell: The Other Side of Fear. Their words and this documentary proved that sometimes all you need is one person to speak up about their struggle to realise you aren’t alone and everyone in that room left feeling the impact of their words.

The surf community has always been one to uplift and support one another through both success and hardship and both of those were on valiant display at this event. Sold out and filled to the brim of people of all ages and all backgrounds one thing clearly linked us all: our passion for surfing but also our compassion for one another. The atmosphere of this event was one filled with support both for the filmmakers and our own business as we ran our stand in the reception before taking a seat front and centre to watch the programme of films curated by Gone Coastal.

It was a night filled with applause, anticipation, laughter and fun and one we’ll have fond memories of for a long time to come.

Here at Kosin we want you to enjoy the great outdoors as much as we do.  The best way to keep warm when you are out and about in nature is in one of our made to order, ethical and sustainable hoodies or sweatshirts for men, women and kids.  Check out our unique designs and illustrations in our latest collection HERE.
